BUD FOR BLOOD INITIATIVE: THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT BLOOD DONATIONS

On May 10th, cannabis companies in LA and across the United States have begun uniting to take action against the critical blood and platelet shortage. Kristen Yoder, the host of Canna BS Detector and founder of Cynical Stoner, organized Bud for Blood to bring education and awareness across the nation.

“Every two seconds, someone in the U.S needs blood to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatments, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries.” The American Red Cross says the current shortage is due to a 10% decrease in blood donations since March 2020. 62% drop in college and high school blood drives due to the pandemic.

Can Stoners be Doners?

According to The Red Cross, cannabis users can donate blood. Cannigma.com has excellent pointers for donors. “You cannot donate blood if you’re currently under the influence of cannabis. The Red Cross recommends that you avoid using marijuana on the day you’re planning to donate blood. Not only is it against the rules to give blood while in an altered state, but you would also be at an increased risk of low blood pressure and lightheadedness, which could lead to fainting after giving blood.” To make an appointment through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
